Three years ago, I was at a meeting for the RI Holistic Healers Association. It is a networking group for RI based professionals who practice Holistic modalities. Holistic means that the person considers the client’s mind, emotions, body and spirit. It was almost my turn to stand up and introduce myself when I was GIVEN the idea that there is a need for a group of like-minded holistic professionals who work with Children, Families and Educators. I spoke my name and explained that at that time I was a Reiki Professional and that if anyone would like to meet to discuss a kid focused holistic group, to give me their contact information. I received quite a large number of names and e-mails that night and our first meeting was a wonderful turn out.

I told the attendants of the first CHC meeting that I envision children sharing holistic tools and practices in everyday places like the school yard; I envision families that understand how choices and changes effect the holistic well being of each family member.. especially the children; I envision that educators intuitively know how to guide, empower and discover the passion and spirits of their students while feeling fulfilled and empowered themselves. Now years later, I see it as a beautiful interlacing of continuity where Love, Empowerment, and Peace reign.

The CHC is very unique in that it is run by the Spirit of CHC. This spirit is an actual energy entity that is fully formed and has been waiting for us to create the structure in which it can fit. The CHC has natural ebbs and flows that we are just getting accustomed to. Rather than pushing towards our own deadlines and goals, we have learned to listen to the Spirit of CHC for the hows, whats, whys and whens. Many wonderful people have contributed their ideas, energy, gifts, voices, and hearts to bring the CHC to here to the reality that it now experiences. It is an energy that is creating new pathways of understanding, learning, teaching and empowerment. Our children are our gifts from the Divine. There is no separation between us and the Divine yet our Children remember their closeness. It is time for us to listen to them and it is time to create the space for the New Way.

Welcome to the Children’s Holistic Collaborative and please join our vision.

Each child is unique and when one is born into our lives, we the parents become responsible for their growth, health and well being. Many have joked that there aren’t any handbooks for parents when their child is born and perhaps if there was a handbook, it would not fit the child! The unique story of every child and their family begs that there needs to be a higher perspective that we must take. A perspective that sometimes must go against the grain of our own extended family, friends, schools, and society. Our children have many needs that are not mainstream even if they can keep up with the expectations that society places on them.

The key clearly to guiding our children towards his or her highest and best good is Intuition. The grand voice and navigation system within us that connects us to insight and real world actions. The stronger we feel connected to our own Intuition, the stronger our confidence becomes and the more clear we are about every step in our life. The decisions that we must make can be completely supported by the Knowing that it is for the Highest and Best Good of our child.

We asked some of our colleagues what their wishes are regarding the future of the education system in our country.

Here are a few of our ideas!!

My wish is to see schools “loosen up” and incorporate the latest techniques that research has shown to improve children’s ability to learn. To respect different learning styles and foster learning through all the senses. The most progressive educational models are often only available to the wealthy with a school year coming with a price tag of $10,000.00-$15,000.00 or Charter Schools which are very difficult to get into. Incorporating sensory integration, music and the arts along with theme studies into the current educational model would be a great place to start. Change is scary but not changing is even scarier!

-Jennifer

I would like to see an education system that reflects who we are as a culture and where we plan to go. I would like to see art and science as a class together as well as separate. Teachers would be able to create lesson plans based on creativity instead of tested material. I would love to see physical education include meditation, yoga, Tai Chi as well as the typical running and basketball. I would also love to see dodgeball and any mean spirited games taken out of the curriculum. I would love to see children’s work published in the schools libraries at the end of the year. It would allow children to take responsibility for all their work in a way they have yet to do so. I would love to see more hands on field trip type experiences. Again, it allows teachers to use their gifts and students to interact instead of fall asleep in their seats. It also allows students of all levels to participate in the way they feel comfortable. I expect to see education being peaceful and free, not a bunch of public systems that need more money and more security. If we do not start respecting the students they will never know what respect is or how to go about giving or receiving it. We can make a peaceful classroom and a peaceful system if that is where we concentrate. This is the future I plan on creating.

Much love and peace for the process,

-Sara

My vision for children is that they be able to develop and grow in a less stressful environment with a strong message of love, cooperation and tolerance. For this to begin to occur there must be less violence fed to our children in the video games, movies and television shows. These are harming our children’s psyches. Alternative games need to be developed and marketed to aid in this. I would like to see all gym teachers become certified in basic yoga and deep breathing exercises. Better nutrition needs to be seriously addressed. The government should promote healthy snacks.

- Heidi

For my child I wish there would be more community service projects in the younger grades incorporated into the public schools teaming elderly and youth; ie.: schools working and having fun activities with elder facilities. I wish for clear communication/programming among our children and adult population about what “special needs” is, means and how we all can co-exist and flourish. I would love to see a well run program/training for recruiting parent volunteers to help with valuable activities on all age and ability levels. Provide Baby, toddler and child care in appropriate grades….mandatory!!!!
I would love to see a study of various Faith Traditions incorporated into the History and Social Studies classes including field trips to mosques, temples, churches etc…
To honor my one paragraph limit I will end with I wish with all my heart we might provide, maybe even cooking along with the home economic classes, healthy, responsible meals in the school cafeterias.
I would add that to every wish please include and encourage optimal parent and student involvement to make it rich, well attended and meaningful.

Respectfully Submitted and Condensed with Love,

- Deborah H

For the future of our children:

Host a variety of public schools that enhance the innate talents of each child. Some children learn cognitively. Some learn through hands on. Some learn creatively — more of that other side of the brain that does not get focused on during most traditional school methods and often ignored and cut out.

Children need the arts - music, art, photography, graphic arts, computer graphics, pottery, textiles. It helps keep them balanced; gives them a break from the cognitive, mandatory programs and gives those who are talented in those areas a chance to shine.

All graduating seniors ought to take some sort of mandatory basic finance course - how does the stock market work? What is a CD? (no, not a compact disc), IRA? portfolio? how to balance a checkbook. Budget guidelines. Too many leave high school having no clue what entails keeping themselves afloat without going into debt.

Offer meditation within the school system. It honors all religions, even the atheists can’t argue - they can sit quietly.

- Christine S

More money for early education (preschool). Some children don’t go to school until Kindergarten and the demands on Kindergarteners have increased, so they start behind.

Expect more teamwork from parents and teachers. Have workshops to help them get to know each other to work together as a unit.

Smaller classrooms. Teachers have too much paperwork and learning differences as it is.

Teacher accountability. While teachers are “observed” we all have seen bad teachers stay on too long. Provide some kind of support so that teachers don’t burn out.

Parent accountabilty for behavior. Too much time is lost on classroom management. Bad behavior is time lost for other students.

- Lauren

As the needs of our children change, the structure of our schools need to change. Homes are built specific to the environment and climate for where it is located. Similarly, schools need to be built on the strong foundations of parents, teachers, and municipal hands; while having flexible designs that are specific for the population it serves. Federal awards should be provided to schools that are run on creativity, peaceful practices, community service, and Joy.

- Deborah G

Holistic Health care has grown so much over the years. In our community, it has become more common to know someone who may take Yoga, has learned Reiki, or is a member of a wellness center. There are a very wide variety of Holistic practices that are available. Some modalities may be easily recognizable as say, Yoga, while others may necessitate a little more research and exploration to understand its origins & benefits.

Holistically speaking, each person is comprised of unique notes of spirituality, physical makeup, emotions, thoughts, and beliefs that blend together in, of course, unique ways. Within a given family, its members may each present a different body type, blood type, energy level, and interests; moreover, what may benefit a parent may not benefit their child. There really are plenty of healing modalities for as many people!

Often what motivates a person to seek alternative care is when an ailment is not resolved by traditional medical direction. For instance, Chiropractors are a common “first stop” for people with physical pain that is not helped through therapy or medication. While it may seem frustrating, it is important to work in tandem with your medical professionals. The tests provide an important baseline for whatever care you seek and a doctor’s guidance is invaluable.

We innately know that there are other ways to heal our body. The question becomes: where do we start when we have so many options? You start first with yourself. You ask yourself “what is needed to heal this pain?” Then you listen intuitively. Give yourself back the power to know what is best. We experience intuition in various ways such as getting a “gut feeling”, overhearing someone who says something that answers a concern you may have had, you see signs popping up unexpectedly, or you get tingles all over when something feels right. Some great ways to communicate with your intuition are: automatic journaling: ask a question at the top of the page and trust that your intuition guides the words; meditation; prayer; divination tools like card reading; or really sitting with a choice and feeling if it rings true or not. See that’s the point, you have a choice. You know more than another what will help the concern. Let go of the fear and trust yourself.

Sara is an intuitive person who is a teacher and healer as well as a mom. When her two-year-old son Mitchell contracted hives in February, she created a team that would best suit her son. She visited Mitchell’s Physician who ruled out some skin issues. She then met with a Pediatric allergist who provided some tests to rule out some allergies. She talked with Mitchell’s angels, she provided Reiki healing energy to his body and his hives persisted. She uses homemade all natural soap, and her detergent is hypoallergenic. While at the allergist recently, Sara felt she should have Mitchell tested for a gluten intolerance. It wasn’t her doctors’ first instinct, but it was hers. Per Sara’s request, the test was administered and Mitchell was diagnosed with Ciliac’s disease (a gluten intolerance). Sara’s intuition guided Mitchell’s healing while the team that Sara and her husband created ensured that Mitchell’s health would be completely holistic.

Create your own team. Explore alternative health options that can work with you and your family in tandem with your medical professionals. Choose modalities that make sense to you, and require a commitment that you can accept. Allow your intuition to speak you and then listen and trust that you do know best. Just retrieving this power in yourself is healing. Our paths are truly the lessons that allow us to grow and expand. Challenge yourself to release the fear and take the first step to see the miracles that await you!
